The 2014 Needham Steps Up event, one of the most successful in years, raised over $25,000 to support mentoring in Needham. These funds will be used to add five new freshmen to the program in January. The event was held at the Needham Golf Club for the second year in a row and brought together community members for cocktails, a light dinner, and silent auction. An early graduate of the mentoring program, attorney Amy Driscoll Antonellis spoke about how the mentoring program bolstered her confidence and provided the academic support she needed to attend college. A current mentoring pair, teacher Jason Isaacs and junior Mark Walker, shared their experiences in the program. And Cheryl Gosmon, a founder of the program, presented the third annual Stepping Up for Education Award to the Congregation Church of Needham, for its early support for the mentoring program and ongoing commitment to a just educational system.
We are grateful to our generous sponsors and to the businesses and individuals who donated to our silent auction.

“In an affluent community
like
Needham, it can be tough to be the student
who doesn't have the same advantages as your peers. Steps To
Success is a great way for the community to pool resources to make
sure every student is offered a path to academic and social
success. Steps makes a really big difference to a few kids who
could easily become invisible and feel
disconnected.” Susan Bonaiuto, former
Needham Schools liaison to Needham Steps
